I’ve started working on MyCarCost, an Android app for keeping track of car expenses. Fuel is the cost you notice most often, but then there’s servicing, insurance, vehicle tax and small repairs. I want to see them together and understand what it costs to run a car over the months.
I’m starting with four types of entry: fuel, expenses, maintenance and mileage. Litres and kilometres let you track fuel economy; add the other expenses, and cost per kilometre tells you more than the price at the pump alone. I also want to manage multiple vehicles and customise categories, because we don’t all keep records in the same way.
The project is in development and there isn’t a public version yet. Data stays on the phone, with import and export options so it can also be used in a spreadsheet. For now, I’m focusing on data entry: adding a fill-up or an expense should be straightforward, even when you only have a few minutes. There’s a short introduction on the apps page. If you already keep a record of your car expenses, I’d love to hear how you organise it.
